Democrats To Debate Before Gay Audience

are mixed feelings from the gay-rights community about Thursday's historic Democratic presidential forum devoted solely to their issues. On one hand, it's a major milestone for the movement and a sign that the Democratic contenders want to court their votes. On the other hand, there's frustration that none of the front-runners is calling for the legalization of gay marriage, while two support it: Rep. Dennis Kucinich and Mike Gravel. The forum, to be held in Los Angeles, is co-sponsored by the Human Rights Campaign, a gay-rights group that has become increasingly influential in Democratic politics, and by Logo, the gay-oriented cable channel that will provide a live telecast and Internet simulcast. The six participating Democrats are:
  • Sen. Hillary Clinton
  • Sen. John Edwards
  • Sen. Michael Gravel
  • Rep. Dennis Kucinich
  • Sen. Barack Obama
  • Gov. Bill Richardson
All of the Democratic candidates support a federal ban on job discrimination against gays. They also favor repeal of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy and support civil unions for same-sex couples.Human Rights Campaign president Joe Solmonese will serve as a panelist, along with singer Melissa Etheridge and Washington Post editorial writer Jonathan Capehart. The Logo channel said it offered to host a forum for Republican candidates, but had no takers. And some conservative activists have criticized. thanks to wgal.com for this
